Red ForestThe Red Forest was a stand of pine trees that stood directly in the path of the deadliest radioactive debris from the April 26, 1986 explosion. Radiation levels were so high, the trees turned red and eventually died. They were bulldozed and buried on the spot in 1987, covered with a thick carpet of sand and planted with pine saplings.
